Cirsium rivulare 'Atropurpureum' is an ornamental thistle, bearing incredible, deep crimson thistles on long, elegant, erect, leafless stems, above spiny, dark green foliage. Flowers from July to September. It's a wonderful choice for growing towards the back of a sunny herbaceous border, and works well when planted among grasses and other tall perennials. Prefers moist soil and full sun but will tolerate partial shade.
This handsome, towering thistle is a valuable addition to a summer garden and looks equally at home in a wildflower meadow, beside water or in groups among other perennials.
